Tattoo aftercare with Dermalize
How to ensure your tattoo heals perfectly
At our tattoo studio in St. Gallen, every new tattoo receives the best possible care right from the start. That’s why we protect it with Dermalize — a breathable, waterproof film specially designed for tattoo healing. It’s more hygienic, more comfortable and ensures better long-term results than traditional dressings. Here you can find out everything you need to know about looking after your new tattoo.
What is Dermalize and why do we use it?
Dermalize acts like a second skin: it protects your tattoo from bacteria, friction and dirt, whilst allowing oxygen to reach the skin so that it can heal properly.
Benefits of Dermalize:
A cleaner healing process with a lower risk of infection
Less scab formation and faster healing
Flexible and comfortable for everyday use
Shower-proof, without softening the tattoo
Helps preserve colours and lines over the long term
Step-by-step care
1. Whilst wearing Dermalize
Wear the film for as long as we recommend (usually several days, depending on the tattoo and your skin type).
You can have a shower, but avoid soaking for too long or scrubbing too hard.
If the film comes loose or peels off prematurely, please contact us before removing it.
2. After removing Dermalize
Wash your hands thoroughly before touching the tattoo.
Gently wash with lukewarm water and mild, unscented soap.
Gently pat dry with a clean paper towel — do not rub.
Apply a thin layer of unscented tattoo aftercare lotion 2–3 times a day.
3. Weeks 1–4
Continue to apply the cream every day.
Avoid direct sunlight, swimming, saunas and heavy sweating until the tattoo has fully healed.
4. Long-term care
Always apply sunscreen with a high SPF to healed tattoos.
Keep your skin healthy and moisturized.
If necessary, have it re-stamped to keep the lines and colors looking fresh.
Common mistakes you should avoid
❌ Removing Dermalize too soon without consulting a professional
❌ Using too much cream (smothering the skin)
❌ Use Vaseline or similar products (which promote bacterial growth)
❌ Ignoring signs of infection (redness, swelling, pus — seek medical advice immediately)
Conclusion: The beauty of your tattoo depends both on the artist’s skill and on how well you look after it. With Dermalize and the right aftercare, your tattoo will heal perfectly and look stunning for many years to come.
